An articulation disorder is a type of speech disorder in which people have difficulty articulating certain sounds. It primarily consists of substituting one sound for another, indistinct speech, or speech demeaning. In layman's terms, articulation is the process of producing speech sounds by manipulating articulators in a specific manner in order to communicate ideas. Each language has its own speech sound that is used to form words. However, articulation disorder occurs when a child produces sounds with incorrect placement, pressure, coordination, or timing of the articulators. It produces a distorted sound that strongly suggests a speech sound disorder. A sound can be misarticulated in a variety of ways, including substitutions, distortions, additions, and deletions. It is important to note that speech errors are developmentally perfect, which means that several children make the same mistakes during the development stage.
