To treat the various symptoms of cerebral palsy, including muscle and neurological problems, psychiatric conditions, and gastrointestinal issues, a variety of medications are used. Meds for psychiatric, seizure or gastrointestinal problems are the same as for anyone else suffering from those conditions. A person suffering from a seizure disorder, such as epilepsy, will, for example, take one of the standard anti-epileptic medications prescribed to others suffering from seizures. The specific condition and difficulties of a person determine their psychiatric prescriptions. The first-line drugs used to adjust a person's muscle tone, reduce spasticity, or otherwise manage stiff, contracted, or overactive muscles are diazepam (Valium), baclofen, dantrolene, and tizanidine (Zanaflex).
